3 Senses

Monday December 6, 2021

My family has definitely fallen in the cautious category when it comes to the pandemic. We homeschooled our kids for a year and have avoided indoor gatherings. We’re vaccinated and are still wearing masks at stores, even if no one else is. And then, we went to New Orleans for a wedding, leaving our kids with grandparents. Honestly, we didn’t let loose as much as we would have in “normal times” but I definitely entered a piano bar on Bourbon Street and stayed there for a few hours. Afterwards, we took home tests and assumed we were in the clear. We spent time with grandparents and family for Thanksgiving. My husband and son started having mild symptoms on our drive home from the holidays on Friday after Thanksgiving. I was actually on my way out the door to teach a yoga class on Sunday when I realized I couldn’t smell. Our whole family took a test and we all tested positive. Thankfully, none of our extended family tested positive and we quarantined for 10 days with mild symptoms. Fully recovered, minus the smelling and tasting. It’s a real mystery that we were comfortable letting our guard down, and then not being super diligent around family afterwards. I think it goes to show that we are all human. I’m grateful no one got very sick. I’m trying to fully experience being down to 3 senses and really enjoying the moments that a scent or taste comes through. It feels like a gift to smell coffee grinds in the morning.
